Let’s start with the basics.
When I first started homeschooling I had no idea where to start. At that time I was at the library getting out the book Why Homeschooling is the Right Choice by Christopher Klicka, which I highly recommend. I happened to see a box with brochures in it, which were titled “You Can Homeschool” so I grabbed one.
Inside was information about the Homeschool Legal Defense Association & the blessing of having a lawyer from your state that you can call if needed in regards to homeschooling. I know what you are thinking a Lawyer, that has to be expensive. Well guess what its not. These Lawyers homeschool their own children and understand the decision you have made. The cost is only $11.00 a month!
You can go here to find out the homeschool laws in your state and here to find out more or to become a member.
Once you are a member with them you will want to use their forms instead of the ones your local school will give you. The local school forms are very intrusive! HSLDA forms supply the school with what they have the legal right to know, no more than that.
Don’t forget to send in the Notice of Intent to Homeschool form to the local school if your state requires it.
Homeschool Legal Defense Association has this form available on their site for members.
The local school will then respond with a packet that will tell you what your responsibilities are to them as well as a packet on your state laws. Like I said earlier they will give you forms to fill out but if you are part of HSLDA you only need to fill out their forms.
There you have it your first steps. If you have any questions let me know.
